The Long Game
Understanding Cyber Espionage
Espionage isn’t just about governments spying on each other. Today, it's a broad and highly active field that affects all kinds of organisations, often without them realising it. From stealing intellectual property to monitoring dissidents or gaining commercial advantage, the motivations behind cyber espionage vary widely.
In this session, we break down what cyber espionage actually is and why it can affect companies that may not see themselves as important or strategic enough to be targeted. It’s not just a problem for governments or critical infrastructure.
We’ll also look at how different countries approach espionage. China, in particular, stands out for its large-scale ‘vacuum cleaner’ model, collecting as much data as possible, often without a specific target in mind.
You’ll hear real-world insights from past investigations, including how espionage cases differ from financially motivated attacks like ransomware or Business Email Compromise. We’ll also give a live demo showing how we track espionage campaigns using threat intelligence.
